Thanksgiving Cactus
Light
Place your Christmas cactus in bright, indirect light. Avoid harsh, direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves. A north- or east-facing window works best.
Watering
Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Be sure the pot has good drainage, and never let the plant sit in standing water. Reduce watering slightly after blooming until new growth appears.
Humidity and Temperature
Christmas cacti prefer moderate humidity and temperatures between 60°F and 75°F. Avoid placing them near drafts, heating vents, or fireplaces.
Fertilizing
Feed every two to four weeks during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer at half strength. Stop fertilizing in early fall to allow the plant to rest before blooming.
Blooming
To encourage blooms, provide 12–14 hours of darkness each night and cooler temperatures (around 55°F–65°F) for about six weeks in early fall. Once buds appear, return the plant to bright, indirect light and resume regular watering.
Pruning and Maintenance
After blooming, prune lightly by trimming back a few segments. This encourages branching and a fuller plant.
Repotting
Repot every two to three years in spring using a well-draining potting mix designed for succulents or cacti.
