Light
Ponytail palms thrive in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate some direct sunlight. Place near a sunny window for best growth. If grown indoors, rotate the plant occasionally to maintain even growth.
Watering
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly, letting excess water drain from the pot. Avoid overwatering, as the thick bulb-like base stores moisture and is prone to rot if kept too wet.
Humidity and Temperature
This plant prefers average indoor humidity and warm temperatures between 60°F and 80°F. Keep away from cold drafts and avoid placing near air conditioning or heating vents.
Fertilizing
Feed once every two to three months during spring and summer with a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer. Do not fertilize in winter when growth naturally slows.
Soil and Repotting
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil mix. Repot only every two to three years, or when roots begin to outgrow the pot. Ponytail palms prefer to be slightly root-bound.
Pruning and Maintenance
Remove any brown or dead leaves with clean scissors. Wipe the leaves occasionally to keep them dust-free and healthy.
